If you’re really into words, you’ll notice that our clever mug slogan is a mashup, or portmanteau, of the words pwning and yawning. The term “pwn” may have originated in the pre-computer geek culture of chess all the way back at the turn of the 20th Century, in which the winners were termed kings and the losers were branded as pawns, or pwns. Other accounts say it began much more recently, when a careless geek meant to type the word “own” on a bulletin board, but accidentally typed a “p” instead of an “o”. However it started, the term pwn spread through the hacker community to mean the same as “own,” or to gain access to someone else’s computer. Pwning, in a gaming context, means to completely dominate your opponent. In case you were wondering, the past tense of the word pwn is “pwn3d.”

Although we have probably all yawned, and we know the way it feels, science still isn’t completely sure why we yawn. We know it happens often when we’re tired or bored. The best hypothesis is that in these states, we don’t breathe as deeply and that the yawn helps us take more oxygen in. Sloths yawn, as well as all mammals, many birds, reptiles, and even fish! Sloths are cuddly, slow creatures that live in trees and come down to poop only once a week. Some day we hope to have one as a pet.
